Oscars: Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, and more presenters announced

Fans of Wanderlust, your Oscar moment is here. Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd have been announced as presenters at this year’s Academy Awards. A press release confirming the news also announced Oscar-winners Michael Douglas and Jamie Foxx as presenters.
The four will join previously-announced presenters such as Melissa McCarthy, Liam Neeson, John Travolta, Ben Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Wahlberg, Ted, and cast members from The Avengers, among others.
The Oscars, hosted by Seth MacFarlane, air this Sunday on ABC.

Jason Clarke to Star in Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes; Sequel Takes Place 15 Years After the First Film

The sequel to 2011’s pleasantly surprising Rise of the Planet of the Apes has found its star.  Though Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had a bit of a stumble in development as director Rupert Wyatt exited the film over creative differences, it appears that everything is now smoothly on track to begin production later this year under director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In).  In the film’s first bit of casting, Zero Dark Thirty star Jason Clarke has been tapped to star in the pic, which will take place 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  Hit the jump for more. DC announces Watchmen prequels

The trend for sequels, prequels and reboots seems to be spreading beyond the medium of cinema, with DC comics revealing the first official cover for Before Watchmen, a new strand of spin-off comics designed to fill in the gaps of the original Watchmen story.

“Essentially, we’re looking at old characters through new eyes,” creator Len Wein told Wired. “What we’re doing is filling in a lot of the blank spaces in a story that has already, to some degree, been told.”

“There were still a lot of gaps in the histories of Watchmen's characters,” he continues, “and events only mentioned in passing or touched on briefly in the original story. We’re filling in those gaps in the most creative and inventive ways we can.”

Wein will write the Ozymandias series (one of several character-specific mini-series to be released), the cover of which can be seen below. However, original creator and comic-book legend Alan Moore will not be involved at all, having turned down DC’s overtures to write the prequel series. Moore confirmed that the series had been offered back to him if he “would agree to some dopey prequels and sequels.”

What this new development means is that we will almost certainly be treated to a Watchmen prequel movie, with DC likely having factored a film adaptation into their plans to reboot the franchise.

The new comics are set to arrive this summer… we wouldn’t be surprised to hear talk of a new movie by Christmas!

Shiloh Fernandez, the new Ash

Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) has signed on to play the male lead in the upcoming big-screen remake of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead, Variety reports. With the departure of Lily Collins as the female lead, Fernandez is now the sole confirmed cast member.

Fede Alvarez, who will direct the film, wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Diablo Cody did revisions on the draft. Original producing partners Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell (who also starred in the original franchise) and Sam Raimi will produce. Ghost House Pictures partners Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane will executive produce.

In this retelling, five friends hole up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead. A demonic force is unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival.

Matt Lieberman to Draft Short Circuit Remake

Dimension Films has announced that Matt Lieberman, a recent alumni of the Disney writers program, will write their upcoming remake of Short Circuit. As announced last summer, Tim Hill will direct.

“Dimension has had great success with the 'Spy Kids' family series which grossed over $500 million worldwide,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company. “We are looking for 'Short Circuit' to be our next family franchise and are excited to be working with Matt Lieberman and Tim Hill, who has had great International success with 'Hop' and 'Alvin and the Chipmunks'."

David Foster, who produced the original, is producing with Ryan E. Heppe, John Hyde and Brian Manis.

Shooting is scheduled for the end of the year with a release in Summer 2013.
